The government's fishing ban in the Kattegat threatens local communities and one of Norddjurs municipality's most visited attractions, Bønnerup Harbour
The Board of Trustees of the Port of Bønnerup is very concerned about the government's decision to introduce far-reaching fishing restrictions in the Kattegat. This move threatens not only the livelihood of fishermen, but also the small local community and the Danish supply chain with our local fishmonger in focus.
For generations, fishermen in the Kattegat have created a sustainable fishing culture based on knowledge, experience and respect for the sea. The restrictions of recent years have already had a big impact, but the new decision to reduce the allowed fishing area to less than 10 percent will be a big burden for the small local community - especially for the smaller fishermen who already have the most gentle fishing methods and lowest CO₂ emissions.
Our small local community is in many ways dependent on life at Bønnerup Harbor, both the derived income for the port, but also the entire tourism, which is closely linked to the excursion destination with the local charm of the harbor.
It is with growing concern that the government does not consider rural areas, which are already hard pressed for survival. Just as the experience from previous closures unfortunately does not show the expected resurgence of life on the seabed.
At the same time, it is very worrying in terms of Americanization and lack of factual knowledge when a Danish minister appears on far-reaching media with erroneous knowledge about fishing methods. There are huge differences between the many types of vessels and trawl gear. It is important to take different perspectives and scientific evidence into account when creating restrictions with such far-reaching consequences.
Danish fishermen are sacrificed - while foreign trawlers continue
The new restrictions will hit Danish fishermen hard, while foreign vessels will continue to be allowed to fish in the Kattegat. In addition, the global climate accounts must be taken into account so that restrictions are not made that overall burden more than they benefit. This is an unsustainable situation that creates inequality and harms local businesses.
Bønnerup Port's Board of Trustees strongly wants a protection of the Danish marine environment based on knowledge and effective measures and with a consideration of the derived effects - Here a local community that faces the derived consequences.
The Board of Trustees of Bønnerup Harbour urges the government to reconsider its decision and instead ensure a sustainable future for Danish fisheries. We demand an environmental policy and a fisheries policy based on scientific facts and fair conditions with a focus on local communities and tested knowledge.
We want development, not dismantling of our local fishermen and our small community! And we want the necessary environmental measures to be based on factual knowledge
