Fishing port
Year 1937 - The year Bønnerup got its harbor
At the inauguration of Bønnerup Harbor in 1937, the fishermen and other citizens rejoiced in the result of 20 years of hard work to establish a proper harbor at the fishing village. Many of them had contributed a large number of volunteer hours. They showed a unique ability to see and utilize the possibilities of fishing and the harbor.
For the next 50 years, the fishing port was the lifeblood of Bønnerup Strand.
As boats continued to grow in size until the late 90s, the fishing port had to be expanded several times - in 1951, 1964, 1975 and 1997. The last expansion included extending the piers by 250 meters.
Ongoing modernization
The facilities for landing and storing fish have been continuously modernized. The harbor now has an ice plant, cold storage room, box delivery and environmental space for handling hazardous waste, etc. There used to be three fish buyers at the harbor, but today there is only one.
In the mid-70s, the number of resident commercial fishing boats peaked at 55, but today there are 12, some of which do not land fish continuously.
At times, fishing vessels from other Danish and foreign ports use the Port of Bønnerup as their base port.
There is close cooperation between the Bønnerup Harbor Foundation and the Bønnerup Harbor Fishermen's Association around the facilities for landing and storing fish etc.
